Quartermaster's records, 1862-1864.

The collection contains telegrams and reports to and from Perley P. Pitkin during his Civil War service as a quartermaster from 1862 to 1864. There are forage reports for the months of September and December for the 2nd Vermont Volunteer Infantry Regiment of which Pitkin was the regimental quartermaster. The regiment had 60 Army and eight private horses. There is a descriptive list of persons (free blacks and contrabands) employed by Pitkin at Harper's Ferry during September 1862. As well there are reports of ship arrivals at Aquia Creek, Va., from June 3 to June 6, 1863. The ship arrival reports contain the vessels' name, cargo, time of arrival or departure, and class of vessel. There is a list of supplies received, and Army forms detailing rail cars received and what they contained for the Army of the Potomac at Brandy Station, Va., for the month of February 1864. Lastly, there is a report of ships arriving at City Point, Va., for the months of June through October 1864.

Perley P. Pitkin of Montpelier, Vt., was commissioned 1st Lieutenant and Regimental Quartermaster for the 2nd Vermont Regiment on June 6, 1861. He was promoted to Captain, and named Assistant Quartermaster, U.S. Volunteers, on February 19, 1862. He was made Colonel and Chief Quartermaster, U.S. Volunteers, on August 2, 1864. He resigned on November 7, 1864, to accept a promotion as Quartermaster-General, State of Vermont, with rank of Brigadier General. He held that office for six years by succe...
